Gram Swachaata Report 3:-

Publicity and extension for use of other media’s :

The people of the village were motivated to take part in cleanliness campaign due to media information. A special program on cleanliness campaign was arranged .The following were the developmental items for implementation :

    1. During the period of campaign, officials of the districts use to conduct Gram Sabha for which there were very good responses and during these Sabha, officials provide the relevant information about campaign and other developmental activities.
    2. During the campaign period, the village Panchayat purchased good quality public address system (Mike & Speaker Set) for announcement of different developmental activities and the suggestions to the villagers .
    3. Shri Vaman Raoji Khamkar ,Ex Gramsevek used to provide information about activities to be undertaken about campaign at 5.30 a.m. every day. Hence the people located in the periphery of the village used to listen and they were motivated & Prepared for taking appropriate action about the campaign activities through their active participation.
    4. The women members were divided into 3 groups. Each group of women used to visit the houses during 17.00 to 19.00 Hrs and teach the important of cleanliness at individual, house(family)and community level and information provided is supervised whether the information is made use of by the families visited . Constant review of the such activities is taken by the respective women’s group.
    5. The responsibility by ward has been given to the workers who were supposed to visit each household family and educate the members about personal and area cleanliness.
    6. There was exchange of workers between the wards to evaluate the education process of each others ward in respect of cleanliness at personal level as well as at house/family level and used to confirm the implementation of the program activities.
    7. The youths of the village arranged "Path Natya" about cleanliness and educated the villagers.

Other Programs :

In the village "Nidhal", the developmental activities were started with effect from 1983 through awareness campaign of the resident of the village. Due to the cleanliness campaign of Saint Gadage Baba Maharaj, the village Nidhal availed the opportunity of the developmental activities. Due to the campaign, every activities of development was planned on long term basis to meet the needs felt by the villagers. The major objectives of these programs were :

    1. Implement cleanliness campaign effectively .
    2. To bring the people under one umbrella and keep the awareness about the development and
    3. To do the integrated but all-round developments of of the village.

Hence following components of development activities were executed as the part of developmental program.

  1. Based on the coverage of the different subjects of cleanliness of the village level campaign , following 6 sub-committees of the villagers were constituted.

  1. People participation sub committee
  2. Drinking water sub committee
  3. Latrine and solid water disposal and drainage sub committee
  4. Personal cleanliness sub committee
  5. Eatables, Contagious diseases control sub committee

All these sub committees were formulated on 02/10/2000 and respective responsibility on these committees was fixed particularly with respect of subjectwise planning and implementation. Due to this the villagers could achieve the expected success.

    1. Active participation of women folk was ensured because their participation in the campaign was considered most essential. The women were motivated for action. For example - cleanliness responsibility of Temple was given to women. There was 100% participation of the women in campaign.
    2. Ghanta Gadi on regular basis as the programs activity was started on long term basis to collect the solid waste of the village and a special disposal waste place (big pit) has been constructed at the outside place of the Village.
    3. All the non used old houses were demolished and were converted into play ground for Kabbadi, Hollyball etc.
    4. Open area of the Hanuman and Vithal Rukmini temple was converted into big ground and a stage of 30’X20’ was erected on permanent basis for arrangement of public programs/functions .
    5. "Gutkha" eating/sale has been banned in the village.
    6. In the village "Vesan Mukti Mandal "(i.e. Habit free committee ) to shed out habits of people was activated. People were educated through their awareness about not to drink alcohol .For this purpose following actions were planned and taken :
    1. Habituated alcoholism people were motivated about not to take wine/country wine for a year. If they keep themselves away from drinking habits, they will be honored by giving full dress on behalf of the village and will be congratulated. As a result 22 habituals left drinking alcohol activity, became participants in the campaign activities. The effect of these people influenced to the others who were regular drinkers of alcohol.

    2. There were 25 families belong to "Ramoshi" caste engaged in preparation of "Country Liqueur". The Ramoshi community has decided not to manufacture "Country Liqueur". We expect within short time the village will be 100 % away from alcoholism.

    1. The roads measuring 2.3 km in the village were prepared by "Shramdan". Zilla Parishad , Satara has provided the road repairing and tarring of the road with the cost of Rs.11 lakhs. With Govt. cost, road at Dalvi Vasti and Dalit Vasti were repaired having 0.9km length at each place.Presently the roads in the village and outside are of 4.1 km length. All these roads were tarred.
    2. Roads leading to farms of the village were also repaired through "Shramdhan".
    3. Water supply scheme was implemented at 100% own cost by 125 residents of Bormala Vasti. This is small water lift scheme and all the residents were supplied with tap water.
    4. The locations of backward class people in the village were dirty .During the campaign period,all the residents of said people were kept clean. The major example were Maikkanagar and Sawant Ali.
    5. Private and community drainage system become the specialty of the cleanliness of the village which was supported with percolation pits. As a result no roads and surrounding of the resident houses were dirty but were very clean.
    6. Blood donation camp was arranged in the village where in 100 Male & Females donated their blood.
    7. On 26th January 2001, there was earthquake in Gujarath State. On 27th Jan 2001 ,the village won Rs 5 Lakh as a prize for first number in District. During the prize distribution function , all the residents of the village offered "Shradhanjali" for death of Gujarath State citizens due to earthquake and the villagers donated Rs 25000/- to earth quake relief fund from the amount of first prize received at Taluka level cleanliness campaign competition.
    8. At the time of prize distribution function, Hon Minister Shri. Ajit Pawar visited the village and he appreciated the cleanliness of the village. For this work, he offered RS 1 lakh as a prize to the village and immediately paid the amount in the function.
    9. As a result of Saint Gadagebaba Clean village campaign, the Youth mandals, formal and informal institutions collected Rs. 91 thousand as people contribution and erected 11 entrance gates of permanent nature which helped in increasing beautification of the village premises.
    10. During the campaign period,the village panchayat also erected main entrance gate of beautiful in nature.
    11. There are 550 villagers migrated for employment. They have established their organization. Each of the citizen of this organization donated Rs 500 per individual for clean up campaign of the village as well as all the employed persons visited the village from time to time and participated in the campaign.
    12. The village panchayat office was well furnished with modern type of meeting table for group discussion in the meeting hall of the office.
    13. The competition was arranged for clean livestock byre and healthy animals.
    14. All the houses including houses at distant places (vasti) were cleaned & painted .
    15. All the 652 families uses non traditional energy.
    16. All the 652 families were clinically examined and were provided guidance and required treatments.
    17. Medical check program of the livestock of the villagers & animals was arranged and the farmers were provided with guidance about keeping good health of their animals. The animals were also treated by veterinary doctors.
    18. Mauli Udyan was erected during the campaign period by the village panchayat.
    19. Ex-service man have devoted their participation during campaign period in the various developmental and clean up campaign activities. This was note worthy participation. During their participation , they had prepared fire control equipment by using local material.
    20. During the campaign period, the soil tests of all farms were made and the farmers were provided guidance about application of manure & fertilization of the crops to ensure prosperity in crop seasons.
    21. Twenty two farmer families were motivated with preparation of vermi compost of the solid waste collected in 22 Nadeph pits.
    22. Tree planting program was arranged by planting 150 trees.
    23. "Gappi Fish" were released in the drained water to control the attack of mosquitoes .
    24. During campaign period, community latrines were erected outside the village premises and at Wadi Vasti residents houses.
    25. The telephone exchange (Indian Switch C-DOT)of the village was connected with optical fiber. As a result the control system was updated and all 120 waiting listed applicants were provided with new telephone connections. Due to Optical fiber link ,the villagers could establish fast communication with the entire World with Voice, data transfer, Internet and E-MAIL facility with higher ,fast & stable speed. The worker of village Panchayat Shri. Suresh Khuspe has prepared telephone directory of 320 telephones of Nidhal Village at his own cost and directory was distributed free of cost to the Telephone customers .
    26. During the campaign period ,all 652 families opened their saving account.Hence the district collector has declared "Nidhal" as Bachat Gram" and the certificate was accordingly issued by him. Total saving amount was of Rs 25 lakhs.
    27. During the campaign period , 5 house less families were provided with "Yashwant Gharkul" by Zilla parishad, Satara.

DRINKING WATER

There are 20 water resources of community of Nidhal village .Of these tap water supply scheme is the main one. The western side stream is utilized for water collection center through dug well. There is 10HP two electrical operated pumps for lifting the water. In the village, 10 lakhs liter capacity water tank erected at highest elevation. From this water is distributed in the periphery of 2.20 kms .

Two mini water supply schemes are established at Thombrewadi & Mayakka vasti.Other 16 places were identified for use of water supply where farm houses in group are constructed. The water is supplied from private dug well using hand pumps. Before 5 years , Dalvi Vasti ,water supply scheme was erected through 100 % contribution. During clean up campaign residents of Bormala spent Rs 50,000 for private tap water connection through mini water supply scheme where private dug well water is used for this scheme. This has been started recently in April-2001.This work was carried out through 100 % contribution of residents of Boramala Villagers.

During campaign period all the 20 water resources were cleaned.

Water testing for drinking water was done from 10 community water resources. All water from all the resources is safe for drinking as per test reports .

In the village there are 220 private water connections fitted with tap.

There are 24 stand posts. All the non working stand posts got repaired and where taps were not available ,they fitted with new taps. The used water is disposed with by connecting it with main drainage system .Stand post are painted with silver color and white color.

PERSONAL CLEANLINESS

Attention is given to the personal cleanliness of children, students, older men and women of the village.

There are 1592 female, 207 youth and 273 old people in the village. The attendance of students in primary school and high school of was 240 and 613 respectively .Total 853 students.

Taking bath every day, use of washed clothes, hair care, nail cutting, cleaning home and its surrounding etc where the aspects of personal cleanliness .This was provided by the personal Cleanliness sub -committee through education of the villagers. As a result due action is being taken by the members of every family in the village Nidhal.

Medical clinical tests were arranged for children of Anganwadi and the students of school. During the checking it was noticed that 15 students were suffering due to non cleanliness at personal level .Of them 6 students were suffering from hook worms ,2 skin disease and 7 students having teeth problem. Appropriate treatment was suggested to the guardians of these students.

In order to remove excessively grown nails, supply of nail cutter was made and also community level nail cutting program also arranged in the village.

Cutting nails, teeth care ,every day bathing, hair cutting and use of washed cloths etc were the items to be examined by school teachers. The teachers use to give suggestion about non adoption of these points to the students gardians.

Houses & their surrounding have been cleaned. Additionally for beautification, all the houses were painted by using sky blue color. Thus 758 houses were externally painted.

Open spaces in the village were cleaned up. The leveling of demolished houses was done through shramdan and open grounds were converted into play grounds for playing Volleyballs, cricket ,Kabbaddi etc.

All the school going students , workers , women ,old people and youths cleaned 3 Anganwadi’s, one primary school, one high school, six cooperative offices and other community buildings and temples of the village Nidhal.

EATABLES

There are 12 shops in the village of which 8 are of grocery, 2 cloth stores & 4 hotels.All these shops were cleaned and painted during cleanliness campaign.

Instructions to keep the eatables under cover were given to shop keepers which they followed and they kept all the eatable under cover.

No shop and / or hotel should be located near by school buildings. The village panchayat does not give permission for opening of such shops.

In the market , there are only two hotels which are always clean and neat.

All the eatables of the houses are kept well covered.Hence workers visited each of the house and provided required information about handling of eatables at household level. There from all the 758 houses following these instructions on regular basis.

NATURAL ENERGY

Prior to clean up campaign ,there were 50 families use to utilize improved chulas. During campaign, 484 started using smokeless chulas. Hence number of families using smokeless chulas was increased up to 534.There was not a single piece of solar cooker prior to the cleanup campaign .Then 100 families purchased the solar cooker and 85 cookers are in use.

There was not a single solar lamp prior to campaign. During campaign period , 10 people purchased it .

There were 36 Biogas plants prior to 2/10/2000 .Of them 7 were in operation and 29 plants were not suitable for use. During campaign period 11 people installed the plant. Thus presently 18 Bio gas plants are in operation.

In order to have less use of fire wood, agricultural waste and cow dung cakes, and to minimize pollution and to raise standard of living of women, use of natural gas was promoted. As a result 67,21 & 30 gas units of Bharat, HP and Reliance company respectively was purchased by villagers. Thus all 118 families are using natural gases on regular basis.

Use of solar lamp, smokeless chula and bio gas is being made either one unit or their combination by 651 families. 100% families use natural energy.

HOUSE HOLD ARRANGEMETS

Arrangements in house is a very comprehensive subject . While working on this ,7 subjects looked after by 7 subcommittees & are considered in an integrated manner.

    1. Interior cleanliness of house by use of less costly means.
    2. How to keep purity of drinking water, its handling and what low cost means to be made use of ?
    3. How to protect eatables and their security in a house.?
    4. How to keep latrines clean and what low cost material to be used?
    5. Care and wear of cloths & its cleanliness.
    6. Personal cleanliness i.e cutting the nails, removing dirty material in hair etc to be demonstrated.
    7. Surrounding of the house to be kept neat & clean.

All these seven subjects were dealt with thorough periodical visits to women folk by using extension teaching methods. Thus all 652 families were visited with effect from 17/10/2000 which is the day of declaring the educational movement.

For this purpose, 15 women were divided in to 3 groups each consisting of 5 women. These groups use to visit during 5 to 7 p.m. every day each house. First visit was educational one and subsequent visits were for reviewing the progress and getting the corrected mistakes by follow up & by educational approach. During last 3 months the 652 families were visited again and again by respective group members. There after by wards ,the inspection visits were arranged and actions proposed of 7 subjects were got executed and followed by confirmation.
